Doom 3 and Dell XPS Gen 2 graphics problems

I just got a refurbished XPS Gen 2 laptop with a 2.0 GHZ processor and an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra chip. 1 GB system memory, 256 MB vid memory.

All reviews of the XPS system indicate framerates between 60 and 90 fps with all different kinds of graphics detail settings, some with AA, some with out.

The best I can get using "timedemo demo1" from the console in Doom3 is 27 fps. And this is with all of the graphics settings set to low or off at 640x480 resolution.

I have tried several different video drivers - reference drivers from nVidia, latest drivers from Dell, original drivers that came with on the system CD.

I have tried editing the DoomConfig.cfg file to tweak some of the video settings.

Nothing will make this game run any faster or smoother.

Am I missing something?

Sounds like system settings rather than game, assume this is a "clean install" wth no other GFX drivers lurkng about. Start with basics like the BIOS settings and work up.
