PR head David Karraker concedes that manufacturing and production issues have forced his company to miss its Japanese and North American launch day shipment targets for the PlayStation 3. The company previously promised it would deliver around 400,000 consoles for North America alone, but recent NPD Group sales data estimated the company managed to provide less than half that figure for the whole territory.
"While initial day-one launch shipment goals weren't achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3s in the pipeline by December 31, 2006."We will continue to utilise airfreight delivery for PlayStation 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year."
However, Karraker claims SCE's partners are now ironing out the kinks at production level, and should have better access to the necessary components. While Karraker has stopped short of revealing any sales figures, he reiterates that his company's shipment target of one million PS3 consoles for both North America and Japan before the end of 2006 remains unchanged in light of these developments.
