Though PS3 supply has been much smaller than had been forecast earlier, Sony has no fears that Nintendo Wii is going to steal their sales. If a gamer does pick up a Nintendo console, it will purely as an intermediate "novelty", a company spokesman recently said.
"We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3," explained Dave Karraker, a spokesman for Sony's U.S. games division as reported by the Wall Street Journal. "If they do pick up a Wii, it's as more of a novelty."
So why have Nintendo's sales been higher than analysts had expected? "It may be because the PS3 is so scarce, consumers have given up looking for one and are going after the Wii with a vengeance," said John Taylor, analyst for Arcadia Investments Inc.
But don't be confused by the numbers so far; gamers still desperately want Sony's console. "Demand, as you can see from the reaction of consumers, has been greater than even we had hoped for," declared George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and communications at Nintendo's U.S. division.
