When you have decided upon which keywords which to optimize your website for ( Read my 10 steps to choosing the perfect keywords www.webmaster-files.com) then you can start to optimize your webpages for those keywords. First thing to do is to include the keyword for the page within the title of the page. Eg Hanging Flower Basket | Garden Design. This would be the title for one of the pages of a garden website. Please notice the use of “|” rather than the word “and”. The more words within your title tag the less weight they will have in search engines so cutting the word “and” out will increase the weight of the other words. Also notice the above example would be for three main keywords, Hanging Basket, Flower Basket, Garden Design. As you can see I have combined hanging basket and flower basket into one phrase cutting out one of the “basket”. This will also save words. Another thing to remember when optimizing a website is to choose different titles for each subpage of your websites, including in each relevant keywords.2.ALT Image Tags Apply the alt image tags for each graphic on your page. Including within these alt image tags your keyword. Eg. Hanging basket image. Add the “image” or “graphic” within the alt tag to decrease the look of it being spam. The alt image tags will be read by search engine spiders and also are needed to validate the coding of your website. 3.Bolding Text Try to include your keywords throughout content on your webpage. When you have done this “Bold” or “Italic” the text. D o this only once for each keyword. Any more times will hurt your optimization that help 4.Header Tags Use heading tags “h1”, “h2” and include in these the keywords which you are optimizing. 5.Keyword Placement Put your keywords at the start and at the end of your website content. If you have a website using tables and have a left column for navigation and a right for content use this trick: If a search engine is reading your website they will read the left column first which is not good as they will read the keywords later therefore will not get as much exposure. To solve this add a blank table above your left navigation column. The will mean the bot will read the blank table, then the right column table, then the navigation. 6.Internal Linking Try when linking to other pages on your website to use anchor text which contains the keyword. Instead of using “Products” us something more specific which that page is optimized for. Eg “Buy Hanging Baskets” for a webpage optimized for the keyword “Buy Hanging Basket”. Also try to use text links for all pages within your site and stay away from using images as links. 7.Add a Site-map Create a site-map online or by yourself and contain a link on your website to it. This will help search engine spiders and will help index your website correctly. You should also submit it to google. When you sign up to google you should find a link for site-map submission. |
