Today, when I switched on three of my computers all came up with:

Windows Defender [dialogue box]

"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A Problem caused Windows Defender to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."

A PC restart didn't help and I checked the service, the Windows Defender service was disabled. Even when I enabled it, on re-boot same error message.

There is nothing abvout this on the M$ KB or anywhere else.

I downloaded and re-installed it on one of my PCs and it now works OK.

I suspect that M$ have done something and maybe this version was timed to expire at the end of the year? Does anyone know?

I expect lots of phone calls from my clients! :-(

Solution:

What operating system are you using?

Windows Defender Beta expires on December 31, 2006. So you need to update to the latest verstion of Windows Defender. Windows Defender no longer supports Windows 2000.
