The XviD codec is a relatively new codec and at the time of this writing, is still in the alpha phase of development. At a glance, the xvid is identical to divx 3.11 in almost every way However, upon closer inspection, the Xvid codec offers FAR superior control of specifications than divx could ever dream. Given that xvid is in its alpha stage means that the compression technology it has to offer can only get better. We at Hypeodermic want to encourage you guys to use this codec, not only because its the best one available, but because it is the codec of the future. As said before, it can only get better. Using the xvid codec successfully can seem intimidating at first, and that's what this guide is for. If your familiar with DivX it shouldn't be that hard as the two are very similar. Be warned, we don't know everything about this codec, so feel free to toy around with the settings. However, my "Come With Us" video was made using these settings, and I think its very pretty ![]() Using Xvid encodes: To take advantage of the Xvid compression you will need to do a "2 pass variable bitrate" encode. Don't let those big words scare you, this is exactly what TMPEG and Nandub do, except they do it automatically for you. For Xvid you will have to do it manually, but don't worry. I'll walk you through it ![]() Step 1: Download the "latest" version of Xvid. Since this is an ongoing production, a new version will be available almost every week. I am going to be using version 2.1 for this guide. If you understand how to do encodes with this version you should be good to go for any other version that you might find. Step 2: Open up VirtualDub and load up your desired file. Select "XviD MPEG-4 Codec" from the compression menu. Click the "configure" button and make sure your settings look EXACTLY like this. Encoding Mode: 2 Pass - 1st Pass (click the "advanced options" button and select the "Global" tab) Motion Search Precision: 6 - Ultra High Quantization Type: H.263 FourCC Used: DIVX Maximum I-Frame Interval: 300 Minimum I-Frame Interval: 1 Make sure the "Enable Lumi Masking" box is not checked Make sure the "Enable Interlacing" box is not checked (click the "Two Pass" tab) Make sure the "Discard First Pass" box is NOT checked. Step 3: Now go to your Audio options in VirtualDub and select "AVI Audio" and "Direct Stream Copy". The reason your doing this is because you don't want to apply ANY audio compression whatsoever on this encode. Since your going to encode the video twice, there is no reason to compress the audio twice. That will just make your music sound like shit. And we don't want that ![]() Step 4: Save your movie, and name it whatever you feel like. I'll be referring to it as "test.avi" Step 5: Load up test.avi in VirtualDub. Now we begin the second encode. Select XviD as your compression and make sure the options look exactly like this. Encoding Mode: 2 Pass - 2nd Pass Int. You will now notice that you can enter the desired size of your video in the "Desired Size (Kbytes)" window. This is very important as it is the single option that will affect the quality the most. If you type in 5 megs your video will, of course, look like shit. As a reference, most divx videos run at about 10 megs a minute. However, this option only calculates the video part of your music video. It doesn't calculate the audio. So if you have a 5 minute video and type in 50 megs, you will end up with about 55 since the audio will take up 5 megs in MP3 format. Anyway, that's all just background information. If you have a 4 minute video, type in 40,000. If you have a 3:30 video, type in 35,000. You get the idea. Just know, that the actual size of the video will be bigger since it includes audio. (click the "advanced options" button and select the "Global" tab) Motion Search Precision: 6 - Ultra High Quantization Type: H.263 FourCC Used: DIVX Maximum I-Frame Interval: 300 Minimum I-Frame Interval: 1 Make sure the "Enable Lumi Masking" box is not checked Make sure the "Enable Interlacing" box is not checked Step 5: Go to the Audio section of VirtualDub and select "AVI Audio" and "Full Processing mode" Step 6: Now you can compress the audio. Wonka and I usually use 192kbs Mp3 since we like to have our stuff sound good. 128kbs is the standard just for reference. Step 7: Save your video. Congratulations! Your done! That wasn't so hard was it? ![]() |
